The Problem

Users not creating quizzes

When Interact approached me, they already had quiz-building software in place that saw great results. Their problem lay in the actual quiz creation. Since Interact didn’t charge customers until after a quiz was published this was causing issues with lost potential revenue. Their customers were often getting stalled in the quiz creation process. Before re-designing the software, I performed a design audit and conducted a series of user interviews with both current customers as well as non-users who met the user persona profiles. From these activities, a series of pain points were identified which gave clues as to why customers would sign up for Interact’s service but never publish a quiz.

Once I had compiled all of the data, I arrived at a list of pain points to address:

The Solution

Increase Quiz creation rate by improving navigation and user flows

With my collected research and knowledge of what needed to be improved, I decided to redesign both the template selected and the quiz builder itself. With an update to the visual style, improved navigation, and usability, I was able to directly contribute to a significant uptick in completed quizzes including several monthly records in revenue.

Single-page Template finder

Instead of moving through 6 screens to select a template, everything was available on a single screen in the redesigned template selection flow. On one page, a user could decide if they wanted to build from scratch or use a template, filter to select one created for their industry, sort offerings, and select the template layout.

simplified sidebar

One of the most effective steps in the redesign was cleaning up the sidebar. The order of operations was changed to be more intuitive with the first steps necessary to create a quiz at the top of the sidebar and the last steps/optional steps at the bottom.

Within the steps, smaller actions were collapsed into larger categories making them only visible during the relevant actions. This made the sidebar less overwhelming and easier to read.

Improved style selection

I moved the style section from behind the primary sidebar to the top of the screen, making it easier to find. Additionally, several improvements were made to the content in the style section. Colors pickers were added so users who didn’t know what hex codes they wanted to use could more easily experiment with colors. Finally, the style bar was made dynamic so the user could more easily find the style information for the element they are currently working on.
